IIT Madras spots at No. 1 on NIRF and Atal Innovation rankings for 2019

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has announced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2019 on April 8, 2019. he Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee Year, has bagged top honours in National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2019 and the very first edition of Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA). The rankings were announced under nine categories – Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Law. The ranking is done on the basis of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

Launched in 2016, this is the fourth edition of the country-wide competitive rankings framework and the fourth consecutive year that the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has emerged as the top ranking university in India.


The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by the Minister of Human Resource Development on September 29, 2015. This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a core committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.
