The steering committee headed by Stanford University professor A.J. Paulraj submitted the report, Making India 5G Ready, to telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan.

The 62-page report suggested to announce 5G policy by the end of December, besides setting up a standing committee to advise on building the infrastructure.
It also recommended that guidelines on regulatory matters be promulgated by March 2019 to facilitate early 5G deployment. It added that even after the entry of 5G into Indian networks, 2G, 3G and 4G will continue to remain in use and it may take 10 or more years to phase out.

The Paulraj panel was formed last year to recommend policy initiatives and action plans for 5G roll out. Paulraj expected the commercial roll out of 5G by 2020. 5G technology may have an economic impact of more than $1 trillion. DoT is going form a three-member expert committee to work on industry concerns and submit its report by March 31, 2019.
