Naga People's Front leader and ruling DAN chairman, 65-year-old TR Zeliang was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Nagaland on 19th July 2017 at Darbar Hall, Raj Bhavan in Kohima. Governor PB Acharya administered the oath to Zeliang after Shurhozelie Liezietsu failed to turn up in the special emergent session of the State Assembly to take a floor test. In February 2017, Zeliang was forced to step down by mass violent protests by tribal groups against his government's decision to hold urban body polls with 33 per cent seats reserved for women. The ruling Naga People's Front then turned to party president Liezietsu and pulled him out of retirement to head the government.
Zeliang is a graduate from Arts College of Kohima. He has served as a minister in Congress government, led by SC Jamir. In 2003, he broke away from Congress and formed the Nagaland Congress with six other Congress members only to merge with Naga People's Front.
