UNESCO names Sharjah as World Book Capital

Irina Bokova, director general of UNESCO, has announced that Sharjah will be World Book Capital in 2019, follownig on from Athens next year. Other host cities include Montreal and Madrid, the first in 2001. Th accolade came amid efforts to encourage reading in the UAE and across the Middle East. With the slogan, Read- You are In Sharjah, the program focuses on six thems: inclusivity, reading, heritage, outreach, publishing and children.

Sharjah International book Fair has grown to become one of of the largest in the world. The year celebrations will start on 23rd April 2019, on the World Book and Copyright Day.
